Girls!

Something a bit different this time out...more stuff for Walmart, but for girls...these were fun to work on. The figures are for screens and I then incorporated them into repeats. One of these days I'm going to put up a more work related blog with samples of my repeats and stuff and I'll put those up there.

JOHNNY GALAXY

Another one of the prints done for men's boxer briefs that didn't get past the sample stage. There is the possibility, though, of some of this stuff making it to market, if all goes well. It's had a new lease on life, as my company is going to try and sell it again to Wal-mart. I doubt they'll be prescient enough to pick it up, but hey, one can hope. I've redesigned this to work as a single image for the blog as there were other robots that went on the back, but they didnt' work for this layout. Johnny Galaxy is my made-up space hero.

SUPER STRONG!

Something from the archives...hopefully I'll get something NEW up later this week...I've finally got some time freed up in my schedule, so I can sit back down at the 'ol drawing board and work something up...all kinds of bits of sketches and whatnot lying around, though...anyway, this was something done last year for men's underwear...the Japanese characters roughly translate to Super Strong and naturally were placed over the crotch area on boxer briefs....I was asked to do something with a Yu-Gi-Oh feel...kinda the same sorta face/hair with a beefed up body. I finished the legs on another paper somewhere, but only in pencil for myself....they weren't going to be on the briefs anyway. It was fun to do and the underwear came out really cool..unfortunately they weren't picked up by any of the major chains. A cryin' shame....I'll wear my pair with pride...

Lunch Time Special - new blog!

Hey folks - it's been a month almost since my last post - and it's gonna be a bit longer until you see some new art for this blog, but in the meantime, head on over to Lunch Time Special to check out a new blog, curated by myself, May-Day himself, Carlos Vega, and the caretaker of the Pencil Box Zoo, Rob Kramer! All the details can be found there!

I've had some sketches and post it note drawings accumulating, so here's a few of some of the latest things.

Kooky Mini Comics

The first half of the day was pretty trying, as my computer was working sooooo slllloowwwllly...finally after a few reboots, by the afternoon it was working decently. But up 'til then, I started penciling and writing a comic page, while waiting for my Mac to either save or export a file, or even to just close a window! Very frustrating. Add the heat in the office and my tired state to that and this is what you get. I inked it at home.

SeeKWence

Here's another exercise in putting a comic page together of unrelated images and characters. The third panel was a pain in the ass, the one you see here the result of eleven attempts. All the other panels were done with just the drawing you see, so I don't know what happened. Included here also, are the original pencils, where you can see the first panel I did that I wasn't happy with after it was inked. I did wind up with a melding of two of the rejects that I kinda like. Maybe I'll incorporate it in a future page.

An Illusive Reality - New Blog

Hey folks...well, 2007 is just about over, but I finally completed the work I started last year on 'digitially remastering' my 1990 'graphic short story' I did in my first year at the School Of Visual Arts, in NYC. I created a new blog to host the pages, rather than clutter up this blog. I think it works best to have it as it's own seperate entity. Click on the link to the right to check it out. Hope you like it! Here's to a great 2008!

Aliens!

I had a couple of fun projects this week - here are some alien designs for one of them, along with the original sketches and Illustrator tracing. They were then colored in Illustrator, with some additional textures added in Photoshop.

The Red Bully

I could probably spend another week on this guy, adding more detail and noodling and noodling, but at some point you've got to declare it done, so it's done as it's gonna get for now. There are some things that I'd like to fix/work on, at least for future endeavors. Things like when and where to use the holding lines. I'm not crazy about the lines at the back of the head, which tend to flatten that area out, but I couldn't find a better solution as of yet. It's been some time since I've painted (and I do call this painting...digital painting, at the least) so I'm relearning stuff I hadn't done in many years. It's all a learning process!

King's Guard

This is another one I worked up in Photoshop, without a prior pencil sketch. I like working this way, but I think for a more dynamic piece, I need to do some actual pencil preliminaries.

BIg Toothy Monster Skull Head Dude

This began at work and was finished at home...all done in Photoshop, including the original sketch. Background inspired by Vega.

Recent and Not So Recent Sketches

It's been a while since my last post, 'tis true. Longer than it should be! Some notes on the sketches - the anime looking guy was for briefs and boxers - I ultimately used a different pose, but with the same Dragonball/Yu-Gi-Oh kinda character, but more beefed up. I'll post the color ver. of that one of these days. The other drawings are from home and work (the infamous sketches you do while 'waiting for something to save' or 'print'...),just some loose stuff.

Vengeance Of The Aztecs!

Something old today..this is the back cover to Mitch Waxman's Vengeance Of The Aztecs #4. I did the front cover to #1, as well as the back cover to #2, which is posted somewhere else on this blog. I also did the covers to issues #1-3 (as well as inks on #3) of the series that preceded this, Plasma Baby. All the issues were published by Caliber Press in the early 1990's. This painting, on 11 X 17 bristol (likely cut down from a 14 X 17 sheet) and then played around with in Photoshop recently, was originally done in gouache. Most of the earlier paintings were in oil. You can see more of Mitch's stuff at the Weirdass.net link on the right. He's one crazy mo-fo.

Freddie Mercury - 1972

I did this drawing from a photo I found online of Queen's performance at the Marquee Club in London, Dec. 20th, 1972. This was a very early show in their live history, seven months before the release of their first album.
