Kung Fu Theater!

Some more work related art...I've been able to do some fun stuff the last few weeks, working on a new Walmart Urban line and then the next batch of Family Dollar designs, which gives me a fair share of freedom to do what I want. The only major limitation is in the number of colors we're able to use - we're limited to six. You have to get a bit creative in how to go about using those six. If this design were colored in any sort of realistic manner, and you wanted to add a bit of shading, you'd quickly run out of colors, so my art director suggested I do it in hues of monochromatic color. This is a slight reworking of a graphic meant to invoke the feel of an old Kung Fu movie poster, but with a bit of an updated feel. The larger Chinese characters for the title translate to '3 Warriors', my imaginary title for this movie...the smaller characters above the warriors heads says 'Fighting Action!'..that line was taken directly from an old 70's Hong Kong movie poster.

Recent work stuff

Some notes...the cracked helmet Little League design was rejected....too violent, plus the wood bats had to be replaced with alluminum bats. Upon looking at this design again, I've gotta wonder...'what the Hell was I thinking???" sheesh! The flaming baseball had the comment that it looked Satanic, but was still allowed to go thru. Trick'd Out (final design was repeat) and the turntable DJ (Mix It Up) are designs done for a Walmart urban line, though I don't believe either were picked up.

it's been two weeks....!

Wow..I can't believe I haven't posted any new art in almost two weeks now! That's kinda sad...but things have been hectic around here lately...I'm getting married in two weeks and I've been working on a slideshow presentation for the wedding just about every night...we're talking scanning several hundred old photos, color correcting, cleaning them up, etc...then actually figuring out the order of them all and setting it to music...a time consuming process to be sure! I have done some sketching here and there...don't know if any of it's 'blogworthy' though.

Still, I sure don't want anyone to pull a 'Day without Jesse' on me and find myself gone from my friends's bloglinks..(this is an inside joke, people, though with a little deduction you might be able to figure out its true meaning)...so, in lieu of drawings, I offer this rambling prose, likely the most amount of words I've yet to post.

Flame boy placemat sketch Collab

Did this one with my fellow artist friend Rob Kramer...I drew the Forbush Man (mascot of Marvel's 'Not Brand Echh' parody comic from the late 60's) like character, with a pot on his head. Rob turned him into a Hell spawn Popcorn maker, adding the wings, flaming hand, tail, hooves, goatee and popcorn!

Skeksel Colored

It was about time I inked and colored one of the monsters I've been drawing the last few months. Here's the first.

Vengenace Of The Aztecs #2 gouache painting

Something from the archives, this time from 1994. Here we have the back cover to the comic, Vengeance Of The Aztecs #2 (of 5), the sequel to the original Plasma Baby mini-series, by Mitch Waxman, published by Caliber Press. Mitch provided rough layouts for the covers, usually on tracing paper, from which I developed oil paintings for the first series and gouache (as shown here) for the second. Original art is 10 1/4" X 15".

Monster Update

Been a few days since I've posted any monster drawings...so, to fill my quota, here's a couple of sketches. The top guy's head kinda reminded me of a Skeksis dude from The Dark Crystal, so I named the file after those characters.
