I was recently asked to participate in a new book, being put together by Josh Frost, called '100 Ways To The Dark Side', a collection of interpretations of Darth Vader. These are some sketches and studies I did while working on my submission, which I'll post soon. While these drawings (except for the top sketch) are more realistic, I went with an exaggerated cartoon style for my final piece.
I think I had to go this route at first, just to learn his helmet - it's a fairly complex design and looks different from every angle. The final piece is much more cartoony.
Thanks, Jason! I feel confident that this Star Wars book will come to fruition. I sure hope so, as the few pieces I've seen done for it so far look awesome! I should have mine done sometime this week.
It's a shame your P.S. 666 story never made it to publication. Still, I'm sure you're still happy you did it - otherwise it might have never happened.
To put your mind at ease I have a lot riding on getting this book finished, and being the head of a small production company I don't want to loose any type of credibility in the commercial art industry, so I give you my word it will be completed!
Your work is looking great though! Keep on producing!
Thanks, Josh! I'm definitely excited about the project and glad to be included. I've had a lot of fun working on all these Vaders the past couple of weeks.

I'm glad that you chose to go with a more stylized piece, Justin...
There are an awful lot of glossy photo-referenced Darth Vader images out there... it would be nice to see a more personal interpretation;)

glad you decided to participate in this new venture.
hopefully you'll find more success than i did the last time i was asked to join in on some guy's book deal.
i gotta tell you i'm really diggin the shading on the 3rd and 4th sketches.
great use of the black and gray tones!!!! and the fine details on the sleeves and gloves along with the rough scribbliness of the cape works great!!!
